Cyril “Mike” Childs
CHILDS, Cyril….
On August the 10th, 2016, a beautiful sunny day that only August in Ontario can provide, Cyril “Mike” Childs, died peacefully at the McCormick Home. Mike was predeceased by his wife Muriel. He was father to Rosemary and son-in-law Tom Logan and grandpa to Jennifer Huszczo and Andy and Angela Growse and Theo Versteegh. Great-grandpa to Beau, Myles and Henry. When Rosemary and Tom married, Mike became the elder statesman to Tom’s children Sara, Dennis, Rebecca and Michael and their families. He very much enjoyed being part of a larger family and was heard to comment that family gatherings were quite noisy when compared to our earlier events, but represented a “happy noise”. After he served in the Second World War as a bombardier, Mike and his family immigrated to London, Ontario from Exeter, England in 1952. He worked for the Union Gas company until he retired. According to legend, when he arrived in Canada his work mates thought that Cyril was not an appropriate name for a Canadian. They nicknamed him Mike. It stuck. Mike loved to play golf; he enjoyed watching golf and soccer. He loved the beach and most summer weekends the family could be found enjoying the sun and the sand at the Pinery. A man of simple tastes, Mike especially enjoyed good roast beef, a little red wine, cheese and chocolate. After his wife died of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2005, Mike lived alone until a broken hip forced him to move to a retirement home. He lived and enjoyed life at Grandwood Retirement Residence until increasing fragility led him to move to the McCormick Home. His family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of both of these facilities for the wonderful and caring environments they provided for him. Mike enjoyed all of his many years but shortly after he turned 101, life became too difficult. He will be missed. remation has taken place. A private family celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to honour his memory are invited to make a donation to the McCormick Home Foundation, 2022 Kains Road, London ON., N6K 0A8 (www.mccormickcarefoundation.ca). Arrangements entrusted with A. Millard George Funeral Home, 519-433-5184. Online condolences, memories and photographs shared at www.amgfh.com.
