Death Has Occurred
The first 24 hours after death is the time requiring the most decisions to be made. We’ve compiled some steps below to help you through this emotional time. We also have an additional FAQ for related questions.
If a Death Occurs at Home
Sometimes, arrangements have been made in advance with a family physician or nursing agency for your loved one to die at home.
If this occurs, contact your family physician or nursing agency as soon as possible. If your loved one was not under the care of a family physician or nursing agency, then 911 will need to be contacted immediately. After the police arrive at your home, a call will be placed to the coroner or primary care physician. It will then be up to that doctor to decide if further action is needed.
Before a funeral home can do anything, the coroner or primary care doctor will need to release the deceased.
If a Death Occurs at a Hospital, Nursing Home or Hospice Facility
If a death occurs at a hospital, nursing home or hospice facility, certain procedures will be followed by the facility to inform both the deceased person’s
family and their doctor.
After you’ve been informed of the death, arrangements can begin with the funeral home.
The funeral director will inquire about your loved one’s final wishes and will arrange a time for you to come to the funeral home to finalize arrangements.
