Death Has Occurred

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS AFTER SOMEONE DIES
Following a loved one’s death, many decisions must be made within a short timeframe. But at a time when you are likely emotionally distraught, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

The first 24 hours after death is the time requiring the most decisions to be made. We’ve compiled some steps below to help you through this emotional time. We also have an additional FAQ for related questions.

If a Death Occurs at Home

Sometimes, arrangements have been made in advance with a family physician or nursing agency for your loved one to die at home.

If this occurs, contact your family physician or nursing agency as soon as possible. If your loved one was not under the care of a family physician or nursing agency, then 911 will need to be contacted immediately. After the police arrive at your home, a call will be placed to the coroner or primary care physician. It will then be up to that doctor to decide if further action is needed.

Before a funeral home can do anything, the coroner or primary care doctor will need to release the deceased.

If a Death Occurs at a Hospital, Nursing Home or Hospice Facility

If a death occurs at a hospital, nursing home or hospice facility, certain procedures will be followed by the facility to inform both the deceased person’s
family and their doctor.

After you’ve been informed of the death, arrangements can begin with the funeral home.

The funeral director will inquire about your loved one’s final wishes and will arrange a time for you to come to the funeral home to finalize arrangements.

Making Funeral Arrangements

If you live in London, Ontario or surrounding areas, contact A. Millard George Funeral Home to schedule an arrangement appointment. During your appointment, information will be collected to prepare the Funeral Director’s Death Certificate and discuss your wishes for a funeral or memorial service.

Please bring the following information to your appointment:

  • A signed copy of the will (photocopy is accepted)
  • The deceased parent’s names, mother’s maiden name and places of birth
  • The deceased person’s date of birth and place
  • A recent picture
  • Deceased person’s glasses (if worn daily) and clothing (including socks, nylons, underwear, slip, and bra)
  • Cemetery plot information (if applicable)

If no funeral plan arrangements have been made, the funeral home staff and a funeral director will assist you with making arrangements.
