  • Dora Adeline (Dicks) McNeil

    McNEIL (Dicks), DORA ADELINE…..

    Passed away at home on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 in her 96th year. Beloved wife of the late John G. McNeil (1976). Lovingly remembered by her daughter Marilynne McNeil, London and her son Grant McNeil and his wife Barbara, Calgary. Nanna was especially proud of her grandsons Scott McNeil, Ottawa and Evan McNeil, Halifax. Remembered by niece, Reverend Janet Bisset and her husband Jim, St. Lambert, Quebec, nephew, Dr. Warren Dicks, Barcelona, Spain and their families, and by sister-in-law, Betty Dicks, Pointe Claire, Quebec. Also survived by cousins in Canada, the United States and England. Predeceased by her parents, F. George (1959) and Mary L. Dicks (1986), London and brother Wilfred G. Dicks (2006) and his first wife Olive (1979), Pointe Claire, Quebec. Dora was a graduate of London South Collegiate and the Victoria Hospital Nursing School (1940), and during WWII served as a nursing sister at Westminster Military Hospital. Wesley-Knox United Church had a lifelong place in Dora’s life; she grew up, was married and raised her family there; she also sang in the choir for over 40 years and served on the Official Board. Over the years, she volunteered with several organizations in London. Most notably she applied her nursing skills in her work as Volunteer Coordinator for the Children’s Aid Society of London and with school clinics for the London-Middlesex Health Unit, and her love of music as a charter and life member of the Volunteer Committee of Orchestra London. The family would like to give special thanks to CCAC and their homecare people, especially to Sue, Dora’s dedicated caregiver who helped her in so many ways over the past several years. Private family interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, London. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 2:00 pm, at Wesley-Knox United Church, 91 Askin Street, London ON N6C 1E7. Visitation with the family will follow the service at a reception in the Centennial Parlour at the church.     Peacefully at Victoria Hospital, London, on Sunday, January 5, 2014, Jan Bikker of London in his 88th year, entered into eternity. Beloved husband of Magda Bikker for 48 years. Loving father of Jack Bikker and his wife Jennifer of New Jersey. Marianne Simm and her husband Allan of London. Cherished Opa of Jan, Paul, Michael, Katie, Chelsea, and Camden. Dear brother of Flori van Capelleveen and her husband Teus and brother-in-law of Cees Rijpma and his wife Jopie, Obbe Rijpma and his partner Letty, Marnix Rijpma and his wife Thea, Joke Bikker and Remke Rijpma all of The Netherlands. He will be missed by his nieces, nephews, and their families. Predeceased by his brother Arie Bikker and his brother-in-law Henk Rijpma. Jan was a loving person and was always helping others. Marian was a member of Richards Memorial United Church and belonged to OMAR Temple No. 111 and Daughters of the Nile.     Unexpectedly at her residence in London, on Thursday, January 2, 2014, Joan (Boutilier) Horton of London in her 74th year. Beloved wife of the late Kenneth Horton (1994). Cherished mother of Kenneth Horton Jr., Robert Horton (Irena) and Michael Horton (Roberta). Proud grandmother of Elizabeth and proud nannie of Jan, Ivy, Claire and great-nannie of Malcolm, Shauna, Patrick, Christopher, Ethan, Meadow and Jada and great-great nannie of Dante and Mateo. “My mom was an angel, the perfect wife and an all around innocent and wonderful women… She meant the world and more to me and it breaks my heart that she passed on, even though I know she is in heaven, happy with my dad… you meant the world to me mom, I will always love you and will miss you.   • Dorothy Jean (Harlow) Vipond

    VIPOND: Dorothy Jean (Harlow)…… Peacefully, at University Hospital, London, Ontario, Wednesday, January 1, 2014, in her 98th year. Cherished wife of the late Reverend Dr. Reid Vipond (2001); loving and proud mother of Mary (Bill Butler; Peter and Catherine), Fran (Don Menard; David and Aimée, Elizabeth and Alan); Doug (Jane Bowden; Nick and Sam); and Rob (Gina Feldberg (2010); Susanna); Great-grandmother of Damien and Jace. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, to Milton and Jean (Mathers) Harlow, Dorothy spent five years as a child in India where her father worked with the YMCA. Memories of those years never left her. She and Reid were proud graduates of Queen’s University where she was the recipient of the Gold Medal in English in 1939. Through their years in ministry with the United Church in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, Dorothy was a wonderfully supportive “Minister’s wife” who always found a way to be her own person. In the 1950s, she earned her M. Ed from the University of Alberta and, subsequently, taught High School in Regina and became a teacher-librarian in Winnipeg. She also was a columnist for the United Church Observer. In the 1960s, she researched and wrote a local history as a Centennial project for the rural municipality of Woodworth, Manitoba. In the decades that followed, she pursued interests in travel, genealogy, gardening and reading. Having earned her ARCT (Piano, Royal Conservatory) in 1935, her love of music was a constant through all the years. Her keen interests in education, literature and music remain a treasured legacy for all of the family. Predeceased by most of her Harlow and Vipond siblings and their spouses, Dorothy is survived by her loving sister, Isabel Plant (Stratford), her sister-in-law, Annie Irvine (Listowel) and many nieces, nephews and their respective families. Heartfelt thanks to the regular and support staff at McGarrell Place (Harris House) for their tender care and attention. Cremation has taken place. Family will gather at a later date to lay her ashes to rest at the Donegal Cemetery in Perth County, Ontario. Beloved wife of the late Robert Coghill for 11 years and the late William Blunt Brown for 49 years. Loving mother of Karen Cochran (David) of Springfield, Virginia and Susan Scorgie (Russell) of London. Proud Nanna to Blair, Kelly, Craig and Casey. Great-Nanna of Cailynn. Predeceased by her parents Robert and May Garriock, her sister Hilda Kaiser (Alf), her brothers Norn Garriock (Orpha) and James Garriock (Shelia) and survived by many nieces and nephews. Ruth grew up in Toronto, enjoyed many years in Montreal with her family and finally made London her home. She lived her life with no regrets having travelled extensively and spent many winters in Bermuda. She will be sadly missed. Cremation has taken place.
