  • Marguerite Isabelle O’Neil

    Marguerite I. (Mardie) O’Neil
On Sunday, May 7, a most gracious lady, at ninety-four wonderful years of age, left this life to begin an even more delightful and limitless existence.
Marguerite Isabelle O’Neil was born in Atwood, Ontario, in 1911 to Dr. John A. Roe V.S. and his wife, Isabelle (Stewart). In 1931, at the age of nineteen, she eloped with the local Anglican cleric, A.H. O’Neil, and so began an adventure that took her through a series of primarily rural parishes, to the Principal’s residence of both the old and new Huron Colleges, and ultimately to Bishop’s Court in Fredericton, as wife of, and prime energizing support for, her husband, the Archbishop of Fredericton. (d. 1997).
Elegant hostess, charming diplomat, loving mother and wife; she was compassionate, keen-witted and ever-giving. Possessed of a quiet and gentle dignity which remained with her to the end, she was an abiding strength to those who knew her. As a woman whose life spanned the tempestuous evolution of women’s role in society”…she was always firmly secure in who she was. “
