Alice (Oakley) Monks
MONKS, Alice…..
Peacefully at Woodlands of Sunset, Welland on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, Alice (Oakley) Monks in her 95th year. Beloved wife of the late Edward “Harry” Monks (2003) for 63 years. Loving mother of Nancy McNeil (Doug), Karen Zanutto (Foster) and Terri Bulman (Vince). Cherished Nana of Anne, Susan, Janet, John, Catherine, Peter and Christopher. Proud great-Nana of Allan, Anthony, Patrick, Jade, Hayden and Violet . Dear sister of Ted Oakley (the late Ruby). Predeceased by her brothers and sisters. Also missed by her nieces and nephews. The family would also like to thank the staff on Maples at the Woodlands of Sunset for their outstanding compassion and care. Alice was a devoted mother who inspired the imagination of her daughters through her story telling, her ‘song for every occasion’ and her introduction to the love of reading at an early age. Her voice of proper conduct will always be in our ears. She was a constant partner to Harry supporting him with her lengthy letters during their years of absence during the Second World War and helping him operate Monks Electric. Always a shy person, Alice blossomed during their retirement years in Buckhorn. She was a volunteer at the Buckhorn Community Centre, the local library, the Horticultural Society and the Historical Society. Alice could always be counted on for her famous pies for fundraising bake sales, making sandwiches for Remembrance Day ceremonies and providing treats to whoever dropped in. Always a sympathetic listener, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews were drawn to Buckhorn for tea and talk. Friends will be received by the family hour prior (12noon – 1pm) to the Celebration of Alice’s life on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 1:00 pm, at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London. Spring interment Clipperton Cemetery, West Nissouri.
