Willempje “Willy” Grootjen
GROOTJEN, Willempje “Willy”… Peacefully at her Home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, Willy Grootjen in her 82nd year. Loving wife of the late Wilhelmus “Bill” Antonius Grootjen. Dear mother of Jacob (Darlene) Grootjen, Theodorus “Ted” Grootjen and Ron Grootjen. Loved Oma of Jennie, Tyler, Scott, Kaylee, Jana and Tori. Dear sister of Zwaantje. Predeceased by her two sisters and one brother.
Willy was a volunteer at the Victoria Hospital gift shop for over 25 years. The family would like to express their thanks to the CCAC, and the VON Home Palliative Care Team and to all the members of her church.Friends will be received by the family on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at the A. CARTIER, Arthur Donald “Art”…At Victoria Hospital, London on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, Arthur Cartier in his 98th year. Loving father of Lynda Thoman and her husband Robert of Strathroy. Dear grandfather of Crystal Reif and her husband Rob Wyatt of London. Loved great-grandfather of Jordan and Shelby Reif of London. Also remembered by his dear friend of 78 years, Marion Kehoe and many friends and neighbors. Predeceased by his sister Bonnie Stubble (2003) of Chatham. Mr. Cartier was the son of Arthur Cartier and Kate McDonald of Chatham; grandson of Francis Cartier and Mary Peltier; and of Daniel McDonald and Hannah Marsland all of Chatham. Great-grandson of Francis Cartier and Ester Ojie of Quebec; and John Crossley Marsland and Jane Hart of Petrolia. In 1942 he married Myrtle Irene Garlick of Chatham (1921-1957). In 1963 he married Wilma Jennet Holden Speck of West Nissouri (1920-1990). Mr. Cartier was London South provincial candidate in 1959, and runner up in 1967 for London Board of Control. For 1970-71 he was elected to Board of Control and appointed Deputy Mayor when Jack Irvine resigned to be the Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario. He won ten consecutive Board elections in 22 years; and headed the Public Utilities Commission polls for 1992-93-94, being Vice Chairman in 1992 and Chairman in 1993. He then was elected to Thames Valley District School Board from 2000 to 2004 and Co-Ordinator of Reunion London 1988, the forerunner to London’s 1993 celebration 200. He was Worshipful Master of King Solomon’s Masonic Lodge No. 378 A.F. & A.M. in 1967, District Chaplain in 1982, Member of the Lodge of Perfection, Rose Croix, Moore Sovereign Consistory (32nd Degree), Mocha Temple and Shrine Club. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Moose Lodge, Certificate of Merit and Honorary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Honorary member of the Canadian Provost Corps and a member of London Mission Services. He was the Erskine United Church Sunday School Superintendant, Licenced Lay Preacher for 31 years and session member of Calvary United Church. He was a former member of London Chamber of Commerce, Western Fair Executive, Upper Thames Conservation Authority, Middlesex-London District Health Unit (Chairman), Home and School President, Princess Elizabeth School. He cast his first vote supporting church union as a member of Chatham St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in 1925.
Art graduated McKeough Public School; and Chatham Collegiate, winning senior track championship; later setting Kent County long jump record; won city basketball scoring titles and scored 57 points in a 1940 game with Blenheim; Coached and Umpired in Chatham and London.
He was elected Chatham member 15th Ontario older boys parliament in 1936, and was a cabinet member. Art was the Chatham Daily News sports editor 1937-40 where among his forecasts was the exact eighth round in 1937 when Joe Louis knocked out James Braddock for World’s Heavyweight Boxing title. He later wrote for The Windsor Star and Kitchener Record before beginning 28 years with the London Free Press as Writer, Farm and Financial Editor; and from 1950 Public Relations Officer until shortly prior to early retirement on his first election to Board of Control.
Friends will be received by the family on Friday, January 27th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London. The service will be conducted at Calvary United Church, 290 Ridout Street South, London on Saturday, January 28th. at 10:30 am. A Masonic Service under the auspices of King Solomon’s Lodge No. 378 A.F. & A.M. will be held at the funeral home at 6:30pm Friday. Interment in Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham. Beloved wife of the late William “Bill” George (1981).
