Ron Wonnacott
WONNACOTT, Ronald Johnston
Dr. Wonnacott peacefully passed away on Monday, January 29, 2018 at University Hospital, London. Ron was 87 years old. Beloved husband of Eloise Wonnacott for 63 years. Loving father of Doug (Debi) of Houston TX, Rob (Nathalie) of Calgary AB and Cathy Long (Greg) of Seattle WA. Also loved by his grandchildren Brandon, Jason (Mallory), Victoria, Ben, Devin, Tanner and Adam. Great grandfather to Ryan, Carter and Allie. Dear brother of Paul (Donna), Tom (Elizabeth), Joy Becker (Lorne), and Alma Scovil (Peter).

Ron received a BA in 1955 from the University of Western Ontario, where he was Student Council President. He received an AM (1957) and PhD (1959) in economics from Harvard. Except for brief appointments at the Harvard Law School, University of Minnesota and London School of Economics, his teaching career was at the University of Western Ontario from 1958 until his retirement in 1996.
He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a former president of the Canadian Economics Association and William G. Davis Professor of International Trade at the University of Western Ontario. He received an honorary LLD from Western in 2001.
His publications were extensive and often in cooperation with his brothers. He wrote about international trade including Canadian-American Dependence. With his brother Paul, he published a study on Free Trade between Canada and the United States: The Potential Economic Effects (Harvard University Press, 1967). This helped to revive the debate over reciprocity in Canada and culminated in the 1989 Canada-US free trade agreement. Ron and Paul also collaborated on numerous micro and macroeconomics books.
He wrote journal articles on a broad range of topics, in particular, on customs union theory, the Canada-US Auto Pact, and recent Free Trade Agreement proposals, industrial strategy, foreign investment, and non-tariff, as well as tariff barriers. In the early 1990s he was a strong supporter of the free-trade negotiations between Canada, the US and Mexico that subsequently led to the trilateral NAFTA.
With his other brother Tom he published numerous books in statistics and econometrics. These books have gone through many editions and have been translated into 9 languages.
He consulted for a wide variety of agencies and testified before a number of Canadian and US government committees.
He enjoyed skiing, Mozart and especially golf, where he once played off 5. He was a member of the London Hunt Club, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield, and the Sunningdale England Golf Club.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Metropolitan United Church, 468 Wellington Street, London. Amy Frayle
FRAYLE, Amy….
Amy slipped away silently into the presence of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on the evening of Saturday, January 27, 2018, in her 96th year. Beloved Wife of the late Gerald Frayle (1996). Dear Mother of Ernest (Marg), Doreen, Errold (Joan), Brian (Maureen), Wayne and Janet and mother-in-law of Lynne. Cherished Gramma of Helen, Len, Deneen, Rhonda, Sheldon, Evangeline, Brian “B.G.”, Tracy, Angela, Kerrie, Timothy and their spouses. Special “Grandma Amy” to Theo, Ann, Amy and Alexa. Much loved Gramma to 26 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She will be missed by her nieces, nephews and extended family. Predeceased by daughter Thora, son-in-law Henry, son Raymond, grandchild Jim, great-grandchildren Braun and Natalia and sister Ora. Her biggest life passion was being a devoted wife and a dedicated, caring mother. She was born in Milton, Nova Scotia and years later with her husband and seven children, they moved to Kiosk, Ontario where they had their eighth child and later moved to Quebec. When Gerald retired, they made the move back to North Bay, specifically Mattawa, where they spent many years until Gerald’s passing in 1996. After his passing, she moved to London to be closer to her children and enjoyed her later years here. The family would like to thank Dr. C. Peacefully in her sleep, at Highview Residences on Monday, January 22, 2018, Marion “Yvonne” Prueter passed in her 89th year. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Gordon Wells Prueter. Loving Mother of Mike (Julie) of Maple Ridge, B.C., Martha Drake (Stephen) of London and John (Charlene) of London. Also loved by her grandchildren Katie and Ryan Prueter, Megan Helmer (Chris), Jennifer, Sarah Stachura (Steve), John and Becky Drake and Adam, Aaron, Aidan and Adrian Prueter. Great grandma to Charlie Drake Stachura. Dear sister of Phyllis Quick of Oakville and sister-in-law of Alan Querney of Sudbury and David Cohen of London. Roger Douglas West
WEST, Roger Douglas….
Passed away suddenly at home on Thursday, January 18, 2018 in his 82nd year. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen West, parents Harry and Marjorie (Ashton) and brother Eric. Survived by Michael and Donna Fleury (Kamloops), Paul and Susan Fleury (London), a number of very cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many supportive relatives. A graduate of Ryerson (broadcasting) and Western University (Law), Roger enjoyed a number of years on Radio and Television at CKNX in Wingham. He was also a popular radio program host on CFPL in London. Roger was also a candidate for the Ontario Legislature in 1968 and continued to be actively involved in politics throughout his life. Upon passing the bar, Roger set up his own law office before becoming the Executive Director of the Medical Laboratories Association of Ontario. Roger also worked as a lawyer for Immigration Canada. In later years and as a very accomplished pianist, Roger often enjoyed playing the piano for residents of several nursing homes in London. Roger was loved and supported by his very devoted wife, Helen. Their travels together took them to several destinations around the world. Both were also active in community development activities – particularly minor hockey. All in all, his was a life well lived. Cremation has already taken place with internment at the Teeswater Cemetery. A Celebration of Roger’s Life will be held on Sunday, February 11, 2018 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the Windermere Manor, 200 Collip Circle, London. Willis served our country with honour with the Royal Canadian Artillery in Canada, United Kingdom and Continental Europe from January 1944 until May 1946, being awarded the France and Germany Star and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was loving husband to Winnifred “Bunny”. Dear father of Wayne (Liza), Susan Hodgins, Barry (Isobel), Joan Cresswell (Mike) and Linda (John). Unexpectedly at home, on Monday, January 15, 2018, James “Jamie” passed away at the age of 54. Beloved husband of Dottie for 22 years. Proud, loving and active father of Riley, Jayden and Matthew Duncan. Son of Grace and the late George Duncan. Cherished brother of Patricia (Lyle) Pollock and Ron (Heather) Duncan. Missed by many nieces and nephews. Jamie graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Marine Biology. He was a publicly recognized leader at the Nature Conservancy of Canada since April 1995. It has made Jamie proud to bring awareness, to protect and conserve this magical place called Canada for future generations. Jamie was a passionate coach to his sons and teammates with the Oakridge Hockey Association. Jamie enjoyed spending many summers at Killarney Provincial Park.
