Obituary
FAREMO, Sonia Lynette…
Sonia Lynette Faremo, born in New Westminster (Vancouver), B.C. in 1964, passed away in London, Ontario on Sunday, October 19, 2025. She is deeply missed by her spouse of twenty-four years, Andrew Chiarella, her two older brothers, Willy (Della) and Arne (Jessica) and her three nieces, Amanda (James), Emma, and Sophia, and nephew, Callum, and great nephew and niece, Cole and Emmie. Sonia is predeceased by her parents Lorna (2017, nee Ratcliffe) and Arne Sr (1975).
Sonia was a genuinely kind, very gentle, and modest person. Never one to sing her own praises many might not know that she obtained a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from McGill University and three other university degrees in psychology, special education, and educational technology. She co-authored numerous articles and conference presentations mainly about medical reasoning and problem solving and medical education. She was for a time a Research Professor at the Centre for Medical Education (now the Institute of Health Sciences Education) at McGill University. Later she was the Research Officer in the Faculty of Education at Western University, as well, she worked with researchers at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University in Alberta.
Prior to her work in academia she was a special education teacher and helped students with special needs and disabilities. Pursuing this line of work brought her to Montreal. An adventurous 20-something Sonia packed her bags and crossed the country by train. This same sense of adventure had taken her to Europe with some friends and then some solo travel after completing her first degree. There she met her father’s family in Norway – a cousin and his wife then visited her many years later when she and Andrew lived in Calgary. Her travels in Europe also led her to assist a Romanian family to come to Canada.
Having lived in BC, Quebec, Alberta and Ontario and travelling with her brother Arne through the Atlantic provinces she experienced much of Canada.
Those she met and befriended during her time were fortunate to have her in their lives.
As a selfless person she elected to be an organ donor and has given the gift of life to several people.
A visitation for her will be held at A. Millard George Funeral Home, London. Cremation will follow and she will be buried in Vancouver with her parents following a service to be held there.

The kindness and warmth you showed me when we first met has left an indelible mark on my memory. Your considerate phone call to inquire about my well-being, despite our recent acquaintance, touched my heart. It felt as though we had known each other for years. I wholeheartedly believe that everyone enters our lives for a reason. My encounters with remarkable individuals, including yourself, Sonia, have profoundly impacted my life. Your influence has been a gift, and I will deeply miss your smile and the friendship we shared. Each person I have met has contributed to my personal growth, and for that, I am thankful. Certain individuals, however, hold a special place in our hearts – those whose memories we treasure and for whom we are eternally grateful. You will be missed but not forgotten.
Love Always Margherita
And family
My dearest Sonia, the day my son brought you into our lives, I gained a daughter, but also one of the finest ladies with a beautifully
compassionate heart.
Sonia, I will treasure the memories of our uplifting chats about cooking and baking, and your passion for gardening, which inspired me every time.
Your calls, filled with excitement and joy, were a blessing, and I felt so grateful to have you share your cooking ideas with me and learned so much from you.
You brought much joy in our lives and the memories we created together will be cherished forever
You were an extraordinary daughter-in-law, and your radiant smile and soothing voice had a profound impact on everyone around us, filling our lives with love, hope, and joy.
You were taken from us far too soon, and I was denied the chance to offer my farewells or express my heartfelt gratitude for the moments we shared. Your absence has left an unfillable void.
Love you, Your father-in-law Luigi. May you rest in peace
As the angels bear you aloft, may you rest in the eternal light of God.
My beautiful Sonia. You were the most humble of students with an incredible brain and wicked sense of humour. You were always shy and unassuming and when you spoke you spoke volumes. You were one of the kindest and thoughtful people. I will miss you and so will so many people whose lives you touched. Your radiant smile when you received your PhD shows your true colours.
Much love,
Your Academic Mom
