Obituary
Stambler, Martin
A canoeist, a skier, a woodsman, a photographer and a jurist. That was Martin (Mendy) Stambler. A titan of a character, whose stories and zest for life would liven up any room. Sadly, we lost this exceptional generous loving man on 16 April 2026.
Mendy was most at home in the outdoors, pursuing one spontaneous adventure after another. The passion started early in life during summers as a counsellor then waterfront director at Camp Winnebagoe where he learned to canoe and camp in the back country. He loved to be on the water in his canoe, paddling through rivers and lakes then portaging to find hidden gems obscured by the trees and rocks. Mendy did not keep these experiences to himself; he shared this love of nature through the photography he captured with his Leica and most importantly taking others along with him, most notably his Pam. Youthfulness never escaped Mendy as he continued to showboat his gunneling skills on the canoe at age 80. This energy underpinned his desire to live life to its fullest and be most generous with those closest to him. Later in life Mendy took up downhill skiing, relishing the exhilaration of tackling the most challenging of expert ski runs across the slopes of Utah. When not on the ski slopes, he was exploring the beautiful National Parks that dot southern Utah: hiking, photographing, camping and always wanting to share the experience.
Born 6 March 1932, Mendy was the youngest of seven, including five sisters and one brother. The family home was brimming with love, art and culture, and Saturday afternoons spent around the radio listening to the opera. This fostered a lifelong appreciation and support for the arts. Mendy saw the beauty manifest within in prints, paintings, photography, sculpture, and architecture. He avidly shared this love affair with everyone around him. Mendy’s love of music was deep and profound; except not for rock and roll. Not a day would go by where Mendy would not jump on his grand piano and play a beautiful melody with no sheet music, or call you up on the day to play happy birthday over the phone.
According to Mendy’s storytelling, his career in law started as a bit of an accident by tagging along with a friend to lectures at Osgoode Hall Law School. In no time at all, he soon became a stalwart of the legal community in London, Ontario, and willingly gave his professional service to those in need. A true champion and gentleman! He practised law for more than 40 years in London with his law partner and friend Randy Mills under the name of Stambler and Mills. He was the acknowledged expert in the areas of Construction Liens and Mortgage Enforcement.
Mendy was loved by so many and will be sorely missed by family, friends, colleagues and his Pam. Memorial donations may be made to the Carla (Mills) Cameron Memorial Fund which is administered by the Thames Valley Education Foundation, 1250 Dundas Street, London, Ontario, N5W 5P2.

To read a well written obituary is as heartwarming as having known the person. Mendy was all that…and more.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mendy when he accompanied my Mom’s first cousin, Naomi, to our home in Detroit to introduce him to us. He got 8 thumbs up from our family! While there were nine years between myself and Naomi, my husband and I got off to an early start and so, our six children were close in age. We lived in Colorado, but returned to see family every summer for seventeen years. No trip to Detroit was complete without a jaunt into London and the Stambler Residence was a favourite stop. Our three daughters and David, Eve, and Daniel got along well; those are lasting and sweet memories for me.
Mendy shared his good taste in all things…music, art, photography, love of nature, faith, and yes, canoeing with his children. His legacy will live on through his last name that each of his adult children have as well as his five wonderful grandchildren. The different chapters in his life made him the man that we all knew. I’m very glad that his last chapter was so happy and fulfilling.

Rest in peace Martin. A friend and trusted advisor to the Palumbo family. You will be missed
We have fond memories of Martin when he lived and worked in London Ontario. My wife, Ella, taught his son, David, Hebrew in their beautiful home in Old South London.
Glad to see that Martin lived his life to the fullest as a father, lawyer, photographer and outdoor lover. No regrets for what might have been he never wanted as long as he lived.
Shalom,
