Obituary
LIEPINS, Gunars…
With family by his side, Gunars Liepins passed away peacefully in his 89th year on June 13, 2024. He is survived by Sharon, his wife of sixty years, and daughters Melinda (Scott) Mapes, Laura (Jason Russell) Liepins, sister Silvia (Witold) Gesing, and predeceased by sister Velta Allbutt. Gunars was a proud grandfather to Robert Mapes and Thomas Russell. He is also survived by several nephews, a niece, and by extended family in Latvia.
Gunars was born in Riga, Latvia to Karlis and Olga. The family emigrated to Canada in 1949, and Gunars worked for many years at consulting engineering firm Hastings and Aziz. He was a man of many interests including golf, hockey, soccer, gardening, travel, fine food, and lively discussion. He always strove for excellence and encouraged others to do so as well. Gunars is deeply missed but forever loved. Visitation will be held at A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London from 2:00 – 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 22, 2024, followed by a funeral service in the funeral home chapel at 3:00 pm. Cremation has taken place and will be followed by interment at a later date.
The family thanks Gunars’ exceptional VON caregivers, the palliative team from Saint Elizabeth, and the staff at The Village of Glendale Crossing. Donations in memory of Gunars made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Online condolences, memories and photographs shared at www.amgfh.com

I never met Gunars but heard many wonderful stories about his accomplishments from his daughter Laura. He led a very interesting and fulfilled life. Thinking of his family during this difficult time and sending my sincere condolences to everyone. May he now rest in peace. Barbara
We are so sorry for the passing of your beloved father. May the many wonderful memories you have of him help bring comfort to you & your family. Michael & Douglas
Sharon and family,
We have had the distinct privilege of getting to know members of your family since our son Adam met Scott, the hockey coach, his wonderful wife Melinda and their young son Robert while attending the U of Western Ontario. What a generous, warm family! Embracing Adam later as he lived with you, Sharon, and Gunars for a time during his Law School days was above and beyond anything we could have expected. Adam would tell us about watching all kinds of sports on TV with Gunars and enjoying the discussions (and food which you always provided, Sharon) which ensued. We remember Gunars for his kind presence, the twinkle in his eye, his humble smile and his courage as he faced his numerous physical challenges. The years fly by but the memories remain. Thank you for making such wonderful ones for Adam and our family. Gunars will not be forgotten!
Linda and Lee
Dear Sharon,
I am so sorry to hear of Gunars’ passing. I am so happy that I was privileged to meet him before you moved – you always referred to him as being “sweet” and I can understand why. Sending you hugs and comfort as you grieve his loss . Brenda Collins 💕
Dear Sharon,
With great sadness I found Gunars name among today’s published obituaries in the London Free Press.
My thoughts and sincere condolences are with you and your Family as you grieve the loss of your life’s love.
Sharon, Melinda, Scott, Robert, Laura, Jason, & Thomas,
Our paths crossed back in the 1960’s, & the rest is history. George & I introduced Gunars & Sharon, we were in each other’s wedding party, & have remained lifelong friends. We shared so, so many wonderful experiences as we journeyed through the years. These are treasures, & the memories are with us forever.
Gunars was always so kind, gentle, welcoming, & fun to be around. You will never be forgotten dear friend—you were one of the best! I hope George met you with his kayak, on heaven’s shore!
Deepest sympathy to all the family.

Sorry to hear of your father’s passing Laura. Condolences from myself and my family. I didn’t ever meet your father but knew a little of his Latvian heritage from you and your stories. Sounded like a good guy like my own father. I miss my dad and you will miss yours just the same. Hang on to the memories as I know you will. All the best to your family.
