Dear Judith, Michael, Marcia, and Melissa — I am sorry that I cannot join you at this time to celebrate the wonderful life of your mother and grandmother. If any of you have talked with Scott, you will know that Marilyn and I have been splitting the care for my mother since her major coronary. To all of you, I remember your mother/grandmother most for her gentleness — and in this world, there can never be enough of that. I think the departure of a person who quietly approaches life and people leaves a silence that often surprises the survivors, but that, in time, it is softened by the laughter and love that speaks volumes more than words. I hope and believe that Gladys’s life, well-lived, will outlast her death, so that as so many who follow Judaism believe, her immortality will be assured by the generations that remember her.
