Obituary
Thompson, Helen Kathryn (“Kathy”)…
Peacefully on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Hospice, London, Kathryn Thompson, née Rushton, passed away at age 80.
“Kathy” was the beloved wife of John Thompson. Loving mother of Bill Kyle (Michelle) of Princeton, ON; Gregory Kyle (Allyson) of Kelowna, BC; Brian Kyle of Medicine Hat, AB; Michael Thompson (Kari) of London; and Sally Thompson (James Watzke) of Toronto. Dear grandmother of Grace Kyle, Charlie Kyle, Sarah Van Horne (Austin), Jessica Thompson, and Cassandra Watzke. Dear sister of William Rushton (Myrna) of Tillsonburg. She will also be missed by her nieces, nephews, and friends. Predeceased by her son, Andrew Harold Kyle; her brother, Robert Rushton (Violet); her sister, Barbara Staffen (Earl); and James Kyle.
Kathryn was born in Paris, Ontario, in 1942. As a child, she loved reading, bike riding, and choral singing. She found math difficult and her math teacher told her mom girls didn’t need math so don’t worry about it, but she persisted because she wanted to become a nurse or teacher. Throughout high school, she worked in a ladieswear store in Paris. Her first boyfriend was Wayne Gretzky’s uncle Albert. She married James Kyle in 1962. In the 1970s, she was a potter in Montreal while raising four sons. She studied nursing at Toronto General Hospital, became a registered nurse, and worked in general medicine and oncology at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London. She married John Thompson in 1997. In her later years, she became a published writer of memoirs and short stories for adults and children. She enjoyed classical music and genealogy, and loved her family.
Cremation has taken place. A service will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, 227 Wharncliffe Rd N, London, ON N6H 2B6, on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at 10:00 am. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks are required and there is no visitation or reception. Interment will take place in August in Paris, Ontario.
As an expression of sympathy, donations in memory of Kathy may be made to the London Regional Cancer Program, 747 Baseline Road East, London, ON N6C 2R6, or to the Humane Society London & Middlesex, 624 Clarke Rd, London, ON N5V 3K5, and would be greatly appreciated. My sincerest sympathies, Kathy was one of the finest people I have ever known. We attended nursing school together and worked on the same floor. Love & Godspeed my friend!!
Letter to the Kyle and Thompson Families – May 5, 2022
Kathryn was a joy to have as a member of our Windermere on the Mount family. We are so grateful for the friendship that she generously shared with so many of us.
Her love of our retirement home was very much evident, as she welcomed neighbours in her home on the 2nd floor during the cooler months and at her patio table in the courtyard in warmer weather. Kathy was also very good at describing her early years in the Paris Ontario region, her training and practice as a nurse, her visits to England, and bringing up four sons in Western Canada. Kathryn found time to skillfully put pen to paper; her expertise as an author is well documented and reflected in several very interesting and entertaining publications such as “Ladies’ Night at Fadel’s”, “Kathryn’s Kronicles” and “Kathryn’s Stories for the Young at Heart”. She was a loyal and fun member of the Resident Pole Walking Group and through a friendly approach encouraged many of the walkers to be the best they could be.
During recent months, her illness limited some of her activities, however, as she and John shared meals and ‘mimosas’ with 4th floor friends and continued to participate in the weekly afternoon socials in the dining room, Kathy’s smile and good nature were always there to make it easy for us to offer support.
Kathryn ~ Mrs. Thompson – Many are better people for having known you – You will be missed!
Rosemary and Lorne
I will always remember Kathy for the compassion she had for my mother Lynn Gilliam during mom’s final days. Kathy’s friendship was steadfast and she was a loyal. caring friend to mom.
Sending prayers and wishes for comfort to the Thompson family.
My sympathies to the Thompson family. I worked with Kathy at St Joseph’s and reconnected with her later at St George’s Church. She always asked about my boys everyone I saw her at church. RIP
Kathy will truly be missed by all of us, but most especially by her family. I knew her only for a short time but I fully truly blest. May the love of Jesus be with you all during this time of loss.
