Dear Bruce, Marieke and Family,
I am so shocked and saddened to learn of Mies’ passing and I’m so very, very sorry for your loss.
Anyone who had the privilege to know Mies is blessed to have been exposed to a life that was truly a source of light and energy.
I first met Mies as a patron of Miestro but we later connected as friends when we met again at the cooking school. She took me on as an assistant in the kitchen at the school as well as her catering business where we spent many an hour cooking, laughing and singing. I’ll cherish our conversations over coffee or wine and I’ll always be grateful for her insights, her encouragements and her enthusiasm. When Mies took an interest in you, you could feel it was genuine and pure.
When I think back at the people who have come into my life, Mies is truly the most extraordinary person I have ever known. She was a gift.
Though we are no longer able to “bask in her light”, we all know that wherever she is, her light is shining brighter than ever. The food is made, the wine is poured…and she’s dancing to the music of her beloved Leonard Cohen.
Thinking of you all,
Dan Bryant

My heart is broken. I met Mies for a only a short time at SLR London, but I have never forgotten her. Mies was one of a kind. Her warm welcoming way about her made you feel like you had been friends forever. Mies had a magical way of bringing people together. I’ll never forget her and I’ll always treasure the recipes she shared.
my thoughts go out to you and Marijke. Mies will be missed and remembered by so many people, her vitality, sense of fun,an active life ,too short but well lived.
Dear Bruce and family. My sincere condolences on the passing of Mies. I knew her well through Ank, and I remember her many talents, and always with a smile. Too young to be gone from us.
Sincerely, Josie Smith
First of all, that is a great picture of Mies, but then again she always looked great. Carole and I were naturally sad to hear of her passing. Some years back, we often went to her restaurant on Dundas street, Miestro, where we enjoyed time with her and Bruce. A friendship developed over the years. We shall always remember her warm greetings when we entered her restaurant and the great conversations we had with her. Her vibrant personality made her both distinctive and memorable to say nothing of her charm.
Mies was an amazing light. Her energy lit up every room she walked into. She will be sadly missed.Time to rest Mies take comfort in the knowledge that we will keep your smile always.
Very sad to learn that Mies has passed away. Growing up with her daughter Marieke, I have many fond memories of Mies. She taught me about good food- I will never forget the French Onion Soup we ate on the beach in Port Frank’s and the first time I enjoyed Indonesian food. I used to love hearing stories about Mies’ childhood in the Netherlands. I always admired her beautiful home and how she always made me feel welcome. I remember one New Years Eve 30 years ago or so taking to the street to bang on pots and pans together! I loved spending time at Miestro, I used to feel so grown up!
All my love to Marieke, Brad and boys and of course to Bruce too. Xxxx
Bruce and family
My sincere condolences with the passing away of Mies. I have lots of good memories we shared together especially when you had Miestro Restaurant and Andy and I had Anderson Printing. For quite a few years we shared some good times! Mies was an amazing Chef and person. I am sure she will be missed by all. I can tell you hang on to the good memories that will get you thru. My prayer is that you will go on with strength and peace knowing Mies was well loved. Hugs to you all!
Sincerely, Helen Wedzinga
We are so saddened by the loss of a very beautiful lady who grasped life with joy, boundless pleasure in people and cuisine as a perfect meld in all she believed. Our deepest sympathies to Bruce, her beloved husband who cared for her with devotion, deep compassion and commitment. Mies gave her beloved daughter, Marieke, her joy and talent in culinary skills and rejoiced in her grandsons, Charles and Seiger’s talents in music and art respectively. She was an indomitable spirit and we will miss her greatly.
I first met Mies when she was head chef at the retirement home on Horton St. where my Dad lived for a few years. She was so kind and tried so hard to find food that he could enjoy and digest well. I then knew her at her lovely restaurant and at the Loblaws super store also. She was always so friendly and creative in her work. I was shocked to read that she had died so young. Please accept my sincere condolences.
Bruce, my deepest sympathies to you and your family. I worked with Mies at RCSS and was instantly taken by her warmth, laughter and love of life, food and wine. I had the opportunity to take a lot of her classes and learned so much from her. One of my fondest memories of Mies is when you both opened your doors and welcomed us into your beautiful home you had in Wortley Village…it was a great evening of experiencing food & wine with all hands on deck helping Mies in the kitchen, the best was sitting in your living room looking out to your beautiful gardens enjoying great conversations and laughs with friends & co-workers. Mies was one of a kind and had a heart of gold. She pulled you in with her smile, conversations, energy and her zest for life. She will be missed. My thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time.
Dear Bruce. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Mies was such an amazing force. Our paths have crossed for so many years that you assume it will go on forever. She has impacted so many. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. With deepest sympathies Jeannine Cookson
My condolences to Bruce and the entire family. I took one of Mies classes and was fortunate to experience the joy that Mies spread throughout the room. Hold her joy in your hearts.
Hello Bruce,

To all of Mies’ family, I extend my heartfelt condolences. I will always remember my time working at Miestro (1998-99)– I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from Mies. Also, it was also an absolute pleasure having Mies cater my wedding in 2005– all of the guests raved about the food. I wish that I hadn’t fallen out of touch with Mies in recent years, but I will miss her very much. Hopefully I will be able to attend a celebration of life at a later date (please be in touch, my email is brooksgray@me.com)– I look forward to seeing Marieke and Bruce and the extended family in the near future.
XO
Brooks
