He is survived by his loving wife Meryl (Watson) of 66 years and devoted sons David (Linda), Thomas (Carol-Ann) and daughter Diane Thatcher (Jeffrey). He was truly a family man and was so proud of each of his seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was a life member of St. Paul’s Lodge, No. 107 and was a faithful member of St. Michael & All Angels Anglican Church for the past 60 years. Family camping, exploring Canada from coast to coast, was a great part of Phil’s life. He and Meryl built fond memories and lasting friendships through square and round dancing and lawn bowling. In his spare time Phil enjoyed wood working projects, wood carving and he led the family hobby of rock hounding and lapidary.
The family sincerely thanks Dr. S. Ernst and Dr. N. If we could all live like Phil it would be wonderful! We sat near each other at St. Mike’s and John, the boys and I all have fond memories of his welcoming kindness.
When John and I celebrated our 25th anniversary we ran into Meryl and Phil very happily celebrating their 65th! Their love for each other was obvious! We will miss Phil greatly and send our condolences to Meryl and the family.
My Grandpa, you will be missed. Humble and patient, loving and kind; you’ve lived a victorious life in Christ. Thank you for the example of a God-centred marriage and life that you lived. We are so thankful to know you are in your eternal home with the Lord. We love you forever.
Our condolences to all of Phil’s family at this sad time. Phil was always a friendly and kind person who genuinely welcomed all of us. He will live on in his amazing children and grand children. He will be greatly missed.
Such a kind and loving man. Our thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time. Wishing Phil peace, and all of you warmth in the memories he created and the legacy he leaves behind.
I shall never forget Phil’s kindness and generosity; it was an honor to know him — The Lord be with him!
Dear Meryl and family,
I am so sorry to read of Phil’s passing. I have such fond memories of you both as chaperones to our youth group, many moons ago! Phil always had a welcoming smile any time we met, whether it be at St. Mike’s bazaar or in the grocery store.
Please accept my deepest condolences.

Uncle Phil, I hold fond childhood memories of you and your family. You were always positive and fun to be around. Yours was the special seal trumpet we looked forward to when travelling those long miles to London to visit. It was joyful to have known you. God speed, Uncle Phil.
Auntie Meryl, David, Tom, and Diane, my heartfelt condolences and virtual hugs to you. I wish you peace and comfort as you grieve.
Uncle Phil, thank you for the awesome family times and cherished memories. Godspeed for your next journey.
To Meryl and family. Our sincere condolences on Phil’s passing. He was a great and friendly guy and we enjoyed our times together for many years in the square and round dance community. Also in later years at the monthly alumni luncheons. Even with his health problems he was always upbeat and friendly.

Dear Meryl and Family
We are truly sorry for your loss. Phil’s cheerful presence and giving spirit will be greatly missed by us.
We have known Phil for over 20 years and we were lucky to share many chats after church or stories at the lawn bowling club of which he contributed his time greatly. We mostly remember how much he spread joy to everyone and everything he did. His kindness inspired us and we will treasure our fond memories forever.

Dear Aunt Meryl and family,
We are all saddened for you and the loss you are feeling but take comfort in knowing Uncle Phil’s found comfort with God in Heaven. Phil was a wonderful happy man who added to every gathering. His kind nature will always be at the heart of our memories.

When I was 3 years old, I had a frightening experience with the “boogie man” one night. My 18 year old Uncle Phil came into my room and wrestled that boogie man into a box. The next morning he took me to the cove at the end of the street and we threw that box into the cove. Thank you Uncle for your kindness, sensitivity, and intuition. That day you taught me a lesson that has lasted for 70 years. The world is a better place because you were here.
We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Phil. He was a very special man indeed full of joy and laughter whenever we saw him. We send the entire family our deepest condolences. Love Beth and Peter.
A lovely service. Thank you, Diane, Tom, David and Father Sam.
Meryl. What a lovely tribute to Phil. Take care of yourself. We will talk soon.
I enjoyed spending time with my Grandpa Phil over the last few months. He was always kind, thoughtful and interested in learning about the lives of those around him. Rest in peace.
My sincere condolences on the passing of Mr Cox. I will never forget how kind he and Mrs Cox were to my parents Ted and Marge Penney. The thoughtfulness and friendship extended to my father after Moms passing was truly appreciated by us all. Mr Cox was always so kind and ready with a smile. Thinking of you at this sad and difficult time.
Growing up at St. Mike’s I have a couple of really fantastic memories of Phil. Growing up, he always showed interest in me, asked me about school, violin etc. One year when I was about ten, we were doing the annual Good Friday Walk-and collecting pledges. Phil pledged me $50.00! I couldn’t believe it. I won for collecting the most pledges that year.
My second memory is of a Christmas eve when I was a server-I went downstairs, feeling unwell, and promptly threw up on the floor. Somehow Phil found out about it and by the time my Mom got down there, Phil was already cleaning it up. Mom and I were talking about these two memories the other day. Phil was a very caring man and I’ll remember him fondly from my years in the St. Mike’s family-being ‘raised by the community’. My sincere condolences. Tanya Sweeney
I’m very sorry to hear about Phil. To me, he was a neighbourhood fixture, always with a warm, kind, so-friendly, happy and sincere greeting. I always remember Phil and Meryl, dropping in one time at my parents’ Pinewood house, dressed as Raggedy Andy and Ann (to be clear, it was on Halloween). I was visiting with my own very young kids and have a vivid memory of the night…such a clear memory. Condolences to Meryl, David, Tom and Diane.
Remembering his friendship and great kindness to the Penneys.
With deepest sympathy, Anne
