Dearest mom,
Sixty-eight years ago you brought me into this world and then with unsurpassed love you let me go so that I would enjoy a better life and now it is time for me to let you go so that you may continue life’s journey free of pain.
When our paths crossed some 16 years ago, we once again were given the magnificent gift of being able to share some time together. That instant bonding – that can only be experienced by a mother and child – was an extraordinary feeling and something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
I love you.
Allison
So many great memories with Aunt Shirley and Uncle Gord from when we were kids. We will miss you dearly but know you are back with uncle Gord. Rest in peace xoxo
My best memories of times in Ontario visiting our Houghton family were always with you and Uncle Gord. You were both loved so much. Rest in peace my dear Aunt Shirley
So sorry to hear about Shirley, she was deeply loved by the Houghton family in Nova Scotia. Great memories of our times spent together through the years.
Our condolences
Shirley Houghton and family
To Allison –
Please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of your Mom. She was a very special woman! We worked together in various courts of the United Church for several years. Of course, I knew your Dad when he worked at AMG. My caring thoughts are with you. Norma Clare
I miss my friend. Shirley got me involved with the Scottish Rite Learning Centre and to her I thank her for that. I have enjoyed every minute of working with her. She will be greatly missed by everyone at the Centre. To her family and friends my deepest condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you at this time.
I was a neighbour on Rainbow Ave when you and Gord lived there (as my mom did) for many years. I was going through old photos just last weekend and there were several from neighbourhood parties that mom and dad held in the 1950s. Shirl and Gord were in one of them – dancing, drinking and generally having a wonderful time.
I’ll always remember your smile Shirl when I think of you. Rest in peace 🙂
I want to extend my sincere sympathy to the Houghton family in your loss. Yes, Beverley and Barb I am so sorry for the loss of your sister. I know you enjoyed each others company. And especially to you Allison in losing your Mom.
As some of you know Shirl and Gord were exceptionally kind to me. As a 17 year old they accepted me into their home at a time when I really needed a more stable environment. I had planned to leave when I graduated from high school. That didn’t happen, I ended up living with them for 5 years. They really did make me feel at home. Shirl spoiled me, even doing my laundry.
One thing I remember about Shirl she always seemed to have a smile on her face and she loved to laugh.
I was so excited to hear from her that she was so happy to travel with Allison as they got to go on some wonderful trips together. That brought Shirl so much joy.
Shirl really did fill her life with good deeds toward others. Such an admirable quality.
Unfortunately now though we have to deal with what the bible calls our “enemy, death”, (1 Co 15:26). It brings me great comfort to know that very soon the wonderful hope of the resurrection will take place. I’m absolutely thrilled to think about the prospect of seeing Shirl & Gord again in the earthly Paradise where we can enjoy ever lasting life together. (Psalms 37:29).
Please know that both Shirl and Gord meant a lot to me and I think of them very affectionately.

Many great memories of Gord and Shirl on Rainbow Ave. It has been a long time since those days, but they are still fresh in my mind. Rest in peace and know that you will be missed
Rest in peace Aunt Shirley – I will hold on to all the wonderful memories of our many family trips to London and your visits to Nova Scotia. Wish I could be there today to say goodbye in person! Love always, Wanda & family xoxo
