Claris was my wonderful aunt. During my childhood I firmly believed her when she told me that she had “eyes in the back of her head”. As such I was always sure to behave myself around her! The last time that I visited her she still displayed a sharp wit and a twinkle in her eye despite her failing health. I have a sweater that she knit for my daughter, (her great niece), that is bubble gum pink with two playful kittens. It is a treasure that I will keep forever that reminds me of her. Her greatest pleasure was her knitting and I can still envision her sitting in her favourite chair with balls of yarn surrounding her and her latest project hanging from the knitting needles. May you rest in peace my wonderful Aunt Claris.
There could have never been a more loving and supportive Mother devoting her life to her family. Unwavering support and unconditional love. Although Gord went on before her, he remained such a vital part of her thoughts and conversations. Together again at last…I never hear Anne Murray’s song “You Needed Me” without kind thoughts of Claris. Rest Peacefully.
We were sorry to read of the death of Claris. My recollections of Claris are from probably the 1940’s. She would sometimes walk from their house on Florence Street to our place on King Street and sit in the kitchen and wait for my father who would give her a ride to work at Coleman’s. I also remember going for a ride with my mother and dad to visit she and Gord at their store in Wardsville. I remember her as a very nice person and also very beautiful. You will all miss her but know that she will no longer be suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
With sympathy,
Lois and Roy Merkley
