Aunty Mary was a wonderful aunt for a young girl. She treated me with love, kindness and respect. She made me beautiful dresses, including a brown corduroy one with yellow trim that I still remember wearing with pride. She bought me a communion outfit when I was six, which was so gorgeous that I felt like a fairy princess. She also gave me my first umbrella when I was twelve. It was emerald green and I felt so grown up carrying it.
More importantly, Aunty Mary spent a great deal of time with me. We would sit on her great big bed, in her beautiful room, going through all her lovely things. All the while she would tell me stories of her childhood. She also would talk of old beaus, and of the spectacular parties she and her brothers and sisters had at the house on Rozel Street. I think they were the happiest times of her life.
Aunty Mary believed in me, and because of her support, I had the courage to try things I mightn’t have done otherwise. She also taught me how to be a good aunt to my own wonderful nieces.
For all that, I am thank her, and I truly hope she has found the peace for which she has been so desperately searching, these many years.
I remember Mary as a very gracious and kind lady. When Chris & Bernie’s twins were being baptized Mary snd her Mom kindly let Ted and I stay at their home. They were both very welcoming and made us feel at home. Mary finally did get her wish to be free of life’s burdens; may she find peace and happiness with the Lord.
Sincere condolences to the Woffenden family. Mary was a special human being and I remember her fondly. Although Mary constantly expressed the wish to “go” it is still heartrending for the ones left behind. May they find peace knowing that Mary is now at rest.
My condolences to the Woffenden family. I have great memories of Mary and these will last forever.
