Pat, Carlye and Family,
Words are inadequate at times such as these but please know that our thoughts are with you. Let the good times be your comfort and we had lots of those.
Fastball, slo-pitch, hockey, golf, bowling, Free Press dinner dances, Tiger baseball and Red Wing hockey trips … those were fun times weren’t they? And Jim always seemed to be a part of things.
I recall one time our FP hockey team had an extra long session (we used to practice at midnight)at the old Gardens, playing cards until the wee hours. The Bird was in charge of collecting the money from the team’s share of the euchre pots and beer sales.
Jim had a large tin can to put the money in and it was almost full. As he got into the car of which I was a passenger, he placed the can on the roof while he fished out his keys to unlock his door.
As we were driving over the 401 overpass on Wellington Rd. we couldn’t figure out while the oncoming cars were honking and waving at us. Most were on the early morning shift at Northern Electric. Just then a dollar bill flapped onto the windshield. Oh no!
There we were, two guys bucking the traffic in the snow while picking up coins and trying to catch the paper money. Our profits that day took quite a beating. Jim and I didn’t tell anybody only that there was an unexpected shortfall. It was our secret and we often laughed about it. And that is only one example of the good times.
Carolyn and I can’t pay our respects in person so please accept our sincere condolences.
As we vacation in Florida, we are saddened to hear this news.
Our memories of Jim at the Free Press and playing baseball will always be remembered and cherished.
Our prayers and thoughts are with you Pat and Carly and family at this time and in the future.
