To Sandra – because of you as my dear friend/former classmate, your dad had his warm, unselfish heart for me over the years. Now as he has departed to be with the Lord, I shall be around you whenever we are in the close proximity to bring back our good old times. I am deeply sorry also to your older siblings, Marilyn and Susan. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

Dear Marilyn,Susan,and Sandra
I was so saddened when I learned earlier this week, from Ray Knight, that your Dad and my classmate, friend, and colleague for almost 68 years, had died. I am so,so sorry.
It was a great day for Western’s Faculty of Dentistry when your Dad joined our academic staff, eventually becoming the Chair of Oral Radiology. His contributions were absolutely outstanding and deeply and warmly appreciated.
Please let me convey to you and to all other members of your families my most profound and heartfelt sympathy.
Most sincerely,
Wes Dunn

Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to the Reid family, Marilyn & Adrian, Susan & Robert, Sandra and the grandsons Sean and Alex. John was a customer, who became a very good friend and we shared many good chats, email jokes and much laughter over the years. He was a very honourable man who accepted life’s changes and challenges with perseverance, a charming laugh and smile. I was in awe how John accepted and adapted to new technology and his passion for computers. We were fortunate to have met and known Dr. John Reid.

I started out by teaching John radiological physics, and ended up by being a research colleague and fast friend for many years. After I moved to Victoria, we have spoken by telephone every month, and enjoyed every call.

We were shocked and saddened to learn of John’s death. John and I were together at UWO from 1972-75 before I moved to Sakatchewan. John had taken over the Division of Radiology when Doug Stoneman moved to Toronto to take over the Radiology Residency program. I was in the program and two years later joined John and Tom Batten. It was a good three years, and John, Tom and I were a great team. We ran our radiology practice Oral Radiology Consultants, and every Friday would meet in what was first my office and then became Tom’s, to discuss the week, both the practice and the teaching, over martinis. Our relationship continued after I wandered off on my academic career and we continued to write letters (shows how long ago that was) and then e-mails and the occasional phone call. It seems strange not to have John still out there somewhere. He always retained his interest in radiology, and was interested to hear about my academic career. We used to laugh about some close family parallelisms. We dedicated our book to our wives, but did not have to say which was first as both were Barbara. When our son Jason was born in London, John enjoyed that his full name was Jason Alexander Ruprecht, same middle name and same initials as he. John will, I am sure, be remembered by the many dentists that he taught over a long and fruitful career. John was involved in research and made many contributions to Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. I could not have had a finer person with whom to start my academic career in 1972.

I graduated from UWO Dentistry in 1975 and John was the Chair of Radiology. He was always kind and helpful. I kept in touch with him through the years including after his retirement. He became a friend as well as having been a mentor. I would occasionally ask his advice about a radiographic interpretation even after his retirement and he always replied with advice and suggestions. I learned a great deal from John and was happy to have his friendship as he had also been a friend to my parents. My father, Jim Clark was a classmate of John’s at U of T and later worked with him at UWO for 16 years as a part time clinical instructor in the Radiology Department. I will miss John as a person and I will miss the regular emails of jokes from him. I offer my sincere sympathies to his family.
