Lockhart, Laurie VanWart
Laurie passed away Friday, November 26, 2010, at University Hospital in London, aged 82 years. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Esther (Seifred). Proud father of Gregg (Susan), Eloise (Drew) and Marilyn (Brian). Cherished Grampie of Cory, Alaina, Keira, Andrea, Ryan and Natalie. Dear brother of Gerald (Marion) and Lois (Roy) Bradley. Predeceased by his sister Noreen (Ed) Tucker. Born in Moncton, New Brunswick and raised in Woodstock, Laurie graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Electrical Engineering and started his long career with CNRail in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he met Esther. His remarkable 37 years at CN saw him rise to the position of Asst. Chief Engineer, Signals and Communications. Laurie represented CN at the Assoc. of American Railways and became a Fellow of the Assoc. of Railway Signals Engineers. Laurie had a happy retirement enjoying the company of friends and family to the last, often at their cottage of 37 years at Lake Macdonald, Quebec, where a constant stream of friends and family shared their little piece of heaven. The dignity, grace and generous spirit of this remarkable man will be terribly missed. Many thanks to the thoughtful staff of University Hospital, who made Laurie’s last days as comfortable as possible. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Laurie’s life will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at 11:00AM at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout St. South, London, with visitation one hour prior to the service (10-11AM). Donations in memory of Laurie may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 123 St.George St., London, ON, N6A 3A1 or to the London Health Sciences Foundation, 747 Baseline Rd. Dear Mrs.Lockhart and family:
I joined CN Signals and Communications in 1977 as Administrative Officer and was fortunate to have Laurie as my boss for 7 great years.
Such a gentleman and always had time to speak with you about office issues. Very well respected amongst his peers and his staff and had a great sense of humor.
One Christmas season, I brought a bottle of Brandy for the coffee setup and told Laurie I had brought in something special for the coffee.
We each took one, put a little nip of brandy in our cups and when he took a sip, looked at me and said,”Ooh, that’s goooood!” Many fond memories of Laurie and my sincere condolences for a very respected person.
Laurie will be deeply missed but deeply remembered.

Without question Laurie was a very thoughful, compassionate person / leader who inspired and encouraged me personally during my career in Signal Engineering at CN. I have many fond memories of the events and converstions we shared and will remember Laurie as a true gentleman.

I was saddened to learn of Laurie’s passing. I have many pleasant memories of him as far back as 1962 when I started with CN on the St. Lawrence Region. He was always a gentleman in all my dealings with him. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of such a kind and gentle spirit. I have fond memories of summer visits to the Lockhart cottage where Mr. Lockhart patiently taught me how to waterski.

Linda and I just heard about Laurie’s passing. He was the model of a true gentleman and he was a great boss and mentor to me. We remember fondly the vists to the cottage, particulary when Laurie tried teach Linda and Walter Friesen how to waterski. I know this is a difficult time but I hope it will be made easier by knowing how many people Laurie touched in a very positive way.
