I was very privileged to be a graduate student of Dr. Stewart. I remember with fondness working in his lab. I also remember a lecture he gave when I was in 2nd year med student. There are not many of those. His passing is a personal sorrow.
As departmental representative (Pharmacology and Toxicology)on the Graduate Committee and later as departmental chair, I interacted with Harold on numerous occasions and always found his patience, humour and wisdom to be highly beneficial. He will be missed.
To the Family of Hal Stewart:
My name is Dr. Donald Montemurro. I was Chairman of Anatomy when Hal was Chairman of Biochemistry and Dean of Graduate Studies. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the memorial service for Hal. Please accept my sympathiy at the loss of your father. I have not seen Hal for some time since we both retired , but I have chatted with Pauline many times during the past few years while shopping at the Valu Mart on Wortley Road. Each time she said that she would give my best regards to Hal. Please accept my sincere condolence at the loss of both your parents
Harold hired me for my first job as Assistant Professor in 1967. My first wife was very ill with cancer when we moved to Western, and he was very caring, letting me spend time with her during the three months she spent in hospital before passing. He was very supportive of all us younger academics during his time as Chair of Biochemistry, encouraging social interactions with memorable parties he and Pauline held for the department. Under his leadership the Department began a Visiting Speakers program and a democratic faculty government, so we all appreciated his leadership, which was confirmed by the administration when they appointed him as Dean of Graduate Studies. My wife Donna and I are sorry to hear of his death and wish to extend our sympathy to Ann and her family.
