Joe Grainger, was my Grandad as well, I was his first grandchild, and I was his Charlie. I remember being a little girl, and telling my Grandad, that Charlie was a boys name… and I am a girl. He told me then, I would always be his Charlie, no matter how big I got, and how girly I would be. Again when I was older, a teenage, akward and gangly, I was still his Charlie, even though I told him how “uncool” it was then. As I grew older, I came to terms with it, finally understanding, it was his way of claiming me as his girl. To this day, no one has been allowed to call me that, because I was only his Charlie.
I remember him coming to the hospital each time I had my children. He brought me flowers each time, always Daisies as he knew they were my favorite to pick. He looked at his first great grandchild by me, Alannah, he told me, “Charlie, you did well, she is as beautiful as her mom was when I held her the first time too”. When he saw my boys, he told me my Nana would have been thrilled. Grandad looked so proud then.
It was unfortunate that he was unable to maintain a relationship to the rest of us, when his wife of 20 plus years, my Nana Pat Grainger passed away. Though I understand it was hard for him. We all missed him greatly. It saddens me he is gone, I loved him, and missed him emensly. I know in my heart, he is with my Nana, and they are both, looking down at us all with love.
On our side of the family, he will be missed by his three step-children and their spouses, Joanne and Joe Vetere, Nancy Tilley, Clayton and Ruth Tilley. Their children, Myself, Christopher, Jaclyn, Adam, Tyler, Jake, and Carley. His Great grandchildren as well, Alannah, Cameron, Colton and Christian. We love you Grandad, may you rest in peace.
