Jane, we mourn Mike’s loss with deep sadness. I have been making a point of telling people in Taber about Mike whether they want to hear about him or not – and yet I know that Mike is no doubt wondering what all the fuss is about. So I just want to say to you and his family that Mike had a profound impact on my life – he made me a better planner – and hopefully a better witness – through his intense preparation (well, at least the first hearing we did together – after that I came much better prepared to his pre-hearing meetings!!). After preparation with Mike, cross examination was a breeze by comparison. On a personal level, Mike sparked my interest in gardening and in particular lilies. Every time I see a new lily pushing up out of the ground or a new plant that looks interesting, Mike inevitably comes to mind. It turns out that Mike and I had closer connections growing up than either of us had realized until years after we first started working together. We discovered that we played Minor hockey in the Dorset Park Minor Hockey League in Scarborough – which might not be a big deal except that Mike and I are the same age. We never did try to figure out if we were on the same team but as far as life goes, Mike was a great “teammate” and he is greatly missed! John
Jane,
We are so devastated to hear of your loss of Mike. Just this past weekend, we were picking out perennials and kept thinking about what Mike would have chosen. Mike was so instrumental in getting us excited about gardening.
We certainly were blessed to have both of you as our next door neighbours and will treasure our memories of Mike’s gardening ideas and tours, fascinating stories and his highly intelligent wit.
We will plant some lilies in our Toronto garden, in memory of Mike, who most certainly
will be missed by many.
We are very sad. Please let us know if we can assist in any way.
hugs,
Cathy & Jason

Frank – Audrey and I were saddened to read of your son Michael’s passing. We are at a loss for words except to say our hearts go out to you at this time. Audrey and Stan
So sorry to hear of Michael’s passing. Many childhood memories flash though my mind when Mom called me. I once ate a worm on a dare from Michael and Richie! If I recall correctly they made me believe I would be closer to being a boy if I did. Our thoughts are with you at this time. Tom and Kathy Bickle
We were shocked and saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. Growing up across the street from your family was a pleasure and the memories live on forever. Our sincere condolences. Joe & Karen

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Michael. I remember him fondly as a young child growing up across the street from my family. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time of sorrow.

Jane:
I just heard the news about Mike and I am so saddened about his sudden passing.
Whenever he came into the Middlesex Law Library my eyes lit up because I knew that for the next hour or so I would be treated to an intelligent, well-informed view on current world events and American politics. And I also knew that Mike would patiently listen to my views. He was objective and insightful, and had a great sense of humour.
Mike was a brilliant municipal lawyer, a rare breed. He had an amazing ability to understand the nuances of municipal law, and to grasp complicated issues in lightning speed. There was many a time when I would run issues by him and would receive the benefit of his wisdom.
I will greatly miss this fine friend, class-mate and colleague.
My thoughts are with you and Mike’s family.

Dear Jane,
I just found out about Mike’s passing and I am shocked and very sad.
Mike was one of the first people I met at the start of law school. (I think it was at a rather strange party and we were “older”. It was refreshing to talk to someone with a background in agriculture.)
Stinky flowers, ugly tomatoes and yellow labs. Mike will certainly be missed.
My thoughts are with you, Jane.
