Dear Betty & family,
It’s with heavy heart to hear of Sam’s passing. He has meant so much to so many people. As a 18 year old starting with Labatt those many years ago, he certainly taught me the meaning of dedication with a ‘bit’ of fun thrown in there.
Both Greg & I are thankful that we were able to see you both just a few days ago. Sam was the best story teller and had a memory that would challenge anyone 30 years younger.
He was very proud of his family and especially the successes of his grandchildren. I’m sure there’s some “Sam” twinkle being carried on.
Deepest sympathy and regards,
Elizabeth (Ivany) & Jim McAlpine

I was saddened to read of Sam’s death this morning. Although I only knew Sam a short time it was obvious that he as a man who could impact many lives. His dedication to St. Joseph’s Health Care will be remembered with much appreciation. Sam was an integral part of the building campaign committee that enabled Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care to be built. It stands today as a legacy to his time and effort. Thank you Sam!
Our condolences to Betty, Hugh and Neil and your families. You were indeed the gleam in his eye.

Dear Betty & Family:
I am saddened by your loss. Sam was my longtime friend. He was one of the first to welcome me to London when I first joined CFPL Radio in the 1960’s. I spent enjoyable time with him. Sam was special and did immeasurable good for Labatts..we in the media and many others always thought of him as Labatt’s most outstanding ambassador. I am currently in the South so will not be in London for Sam’s memorial. I send my personal condolences to you and the family. My friend Sam will be remembered.

Well Great Unlce Sam, I knew you passed when when Uncle Ian called in the early a.m. monday. I love you so much, you knew it was hard to see you because of my Grandpa and you being twins and him being my best friend! You where always so good to me, helping me with moving to Florida and just being so into beer well I clearly took after you! I am so proud to be in your family – to see the article in the paper was breath taking, you didn’t just touch me but everyone. I love you Uncle Sam, I know you and Grandpa are up there causing trouble already! Give Grandpa and Grandma a hug for me. Miss you already – with love hugs and kisses, Tiffy aka. Dear Betty and family,
Maureen and I would like to extend our condolences on the passing of our dear friend Sam.
He was my mentor and taught me more about Public Relations and Media Relations than anyone else I met in my 36 years in the beer business. He was the best.
I am pleased that I was able to have a phone conversation with Sam a few weeks ago and that we shared a few laughs together.
I will miss Sam but never forget him.

FAREWELL TO A DEAR FRIEND AND MENTOR
I was 23 years old when I joined John Labatt Limited and was introduced to Sam McLeod. I had just moved from Windsor to London and not knowing a soul, Sam took me under his wing. He would laugh when I jokingly referred to him as my surrogate father; he was always there to encourage me in my endeavors and to offer me advice.
Four months after I was hired, I transferred to the Community Relations Department of Labatt’s Ontario Breweries and had the pleasure of working as Sam’s assistant for a period of seven years. In his capacity as department head Sam had access to a multitude of media personalities and charitable associations who sincerely respected and admired him. He was continually referred to as the Goodwill Ambassador for Labatt’s and because of his tireless efforts and friendships he was successful in making Labatt’s a “household name” in the city of London.
Sam was overtly proud of his sons, Hugh and Neil and it was not unusual for them to drop by the office on any given day to say “hello” to their father. When I left Labatt’s and returned to Windsor to marry, Sam and Betty attended my wedding.
Throughout the last thirty years I have had an opportunity to travel extensively, but no matter where I was we always communicated. Whenever I travelled Highway 401 passing by London in either direction, I would call Sam and we would chat until my cell phone went out of the service area, I will truly miss those telephone calls. I spoke to Sam prior to and immediately following Christmas before I headed south for the winter. He gave no indication that he was terminally ill but that was Sam’s way, he would not want the attention, nor the sympathy. I was therefore saddened when I received the unexpected news of his demise.
Sam McLeod was an icon, his irresistible personality and humorous wit will be truly missed by anyone who had the good fortune to know him. Sam had a passion for Labatt’s in the ‘good days’ that affected everyone. He was an honest, strong-willed man with boundless energy and genuine scruples and he will be sadly missed. His death will cause hundreds of Labatt employees and close friends to acknowledge “the end of an era”.
I wish to extend my sincere thoughts and prayers to Betty, Neil, Hugh and their families in this time of sorrow. Please know that my thoughts and prayers will be with you on Saturday.

Dear Aunt Betty, Hugh and Ian:
I was so sad to hear of Uncle Sam’s death, and am so glad that I talked to him just a short while ago. He had such a great sense of humor and loved all of us so much. He will be really missed by all of the family and his many friends. I am sorry that I can’t get to London for the memorial service, but being out in Victoria BC and not being able to leave Jim (my husband) on his own anymore it is impossible to get away.
Uncle Sam is the last of my Dad’s(Andrew) brothers to join up with the McLeod clan who are waiting for him with open loving arms in heaven. Our love to you all, Kathleen (McLeod), Jim, Tracy,Karen and Sandy

My deepest sympathy to all of you in the loss of such a wonderful man. He was such an easy person to like, and to coin an old phrase, “your name was safe in his mouth”. No matter when I would stop by his office when I was in London, he always took time to sit and chat for awhile, and I was proud to call him my friend.
May God grant him eternal rest, and all of his family, peace.
