We have wonderful memories of living across the street from Mr. Mackie. He had the best lawn in the neighborhood, it inspired us all to work harder on ours! He always had a kind word for everyone and was great at supporting all of Todd’s fundraising for scouts, or soccer. He was a wonderful inspiration to all he came in contact with.
All of our family have so many wonderful memories of time spent with “Uncle Hughie” and “Auntie I” spanning more than 60 years. We also recall the twinkle in his eye, especially when he was teasing us. We will miss him. Big hugs to Auntie I.
I have to admit that “Uncle Hughie” was my favorite uncle. My parents have a picture of uncle Hughie and I walking down the road a country together. I always remember that picture when I think of him. I am around 4 or 5 in the picture and it makes me think of how he always had time to listen to what I had on my mind and how fun it was to joke around with him. That was almost 30 years ago and the memory is always there.
Auntie I,
I am thinking of you today and send all my love and strength to you. I will miss my favourite great uncle. He inspired me with his kind and gentle manner.
Love and hugs,
Jennifer
We will always remember Uncle Hughie’s kind smile and gentle nature. Your home was our “home away from home” and we loved the time we spent with you both. We enjoyed listening to Uncle Hughie’s stories of days gone by and his thoughtful insights on life. We are truly blessed to have had Uncle Hughie in our lives. Our thoughts are with you Auntie I.
Love, John and Kira Vincent xoxo
We will miss Hughie at Tim Horton’s. We enjoyed many stories of his life experiences. When he finished his coffee he always said –
“I have to get home to my sweetie”.
If anyone wanted a model to pattern themselves after
Hugh Mackie would fill the bill. He always had a smile and kind words for everyone. I can also tell you that he had serious side and gave great advise when asked. Most of all my Uncle Hughie was cooler than the Fonz.
To the Mackie Family ,please accept our condolences on the passing of Hugh Mackie.

Hugh was a great soldier, a great officer and an even greater leader of those of us that followed in his foot steps. A great friend who trained me well and afforded me a very successful career. We will remember him. Brigadier General [ret’d]Darrell M Dean CD
My Uncle Hughie was a fun loving man. My sister and I spent so much time on his lap as he sang us songs from his childhood (with his pretend scottish accent). We always wanted to go into the basement to see his swords and play dress-up with his uniforms, he was quite tolerant of his girls. I now have a little girl who got the very same treatment as he sang “wee chickie birdie” and she beamed at the attention he payed. He always got that twinkle in his eye when he was singing to us. I miss you already Uncle Hughie.
Over the past ten plus years I’ve had the distinct pleasure and honour to have known Hugh Mackie. In countless interviews concerning his service with Lord Strathcona’s Horse (RC) he was always gracious with his time and knowledge. Through his photo albums and especially his recollections he was a constant source of knowledge, enthusiasm and inspiration on how to live one’s life. He most certainly will be missed by many. Thank you Mr. Mackie!
You will always be in our hearts and prayers.
We will miss you very much.
Jay Bourdeau and Family and all of us at Giant Tiger – Springbank.
Dear Iris: Myrna and I offer our sincere condolences. I was Hugh’s 2IC in Camp Borden, RCAC School 1966. A fine soldier, a good friend, and a gentleman. Fred Berge
