Obituary
McLAGAN, Ruthanne…
Mary Ruthanne McLagan (nee Dyer) of London passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Friday, May 10, 2024. Beloved wife of Ken McLagan. Adored mom of Karyn (Ryan) and Kaitlyn (Alex). She is survived by her brother Dennis (Gladys) and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Doug Dyer (Wendy).
Ruthanne was at peace knowing that she had been given time to talk to and be with family and friends since her initial diagnosis last summer. She was in comfort as her soul was freed from her failing body. She touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We will all take time to grieve her passing, but we’ll also find solace in remembering what a remarkable woman she was.
Thank you to the oncology and palliative care staff and all the doctors and nurses who were a part of her care team at LHSC’s Victoria Hospital. A special thank you to Dr. Sanatani, Dr. Malik, and Dr. Mai.
Cremation has taken place. A public celebration of Ruthanne’s life will be held at Calvary United Church, 290 Ridout Street South, London, on Sunday, May 19th, 2024, at 2 pm. Reverend Kerry Stover will be officiating. A private interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery, Glencoe, at a later date. In place of flowers, please consider donating to the Canadian Cancer Society for colorectal cancer. Arrangements entrusted with A. Millard George Funeral Home, 519-433-5184. My deep condolences on the passing of your wonderful mother and wife. Ruthanne was a beloved and inspiring teacher who touched the lives of many art students in her classes, as well as her colleagues and friends! My favourite memories are her fabulous drawings created upon the retirement of other staff members each capturing perfectly the teacher’s personality and aspects of the subjects which they taught. When I left WESS in 2008 she dressed up as Tevye and sang a farewell to me! A talented artist and a very special person, we shall miss her and send our love and prayers your way.
My sincerest condolences at the passing of Ruthanne. I had the privilege of being taught by Ruthanne at WESS for several years in Visual Arts and English courses. She truly embodied what it meant to be an educator, and brought out the best in all her students. She made all of her students believe that each and every one of them had the ability to create, whether it be painting, drawing, or a well crafted essay. I’m thankful for the time I had with her and the valuable lessons she taught. I’m sorry for your family’s loss, and hope that you take comfort knowing that she was an inspiration to her students, and know how many lives she touched. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
Sincerely,
Sophie Neyens & Neyens Family
My deepest condolences to Mrs. McLagan and her family. She was the first person outside of my family to foster my love of art. Her class was always a happy environment and I looked forward to it. She was such a talented and kind person that I will miss.
To Ruthanne’s family,
My sincere condolences to you all. I had the wonderful pleasure of having studied a BFA with Ruthanne at (UWO) Western in the early 80s then continuing on to share our BEd. together as we embarked on a career in art education in Elgin County eventually amalgamating to TVDSB. Ruthanne was an amazing team player who worked diligently in support of her students and colleagues. She was a talented artist and educator who always found the best in her students and went beyond what was expected of her. She left this world way too soon. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
So very sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
Such a kind soul and teacher. She certainly touched our community teaching my generation as well as my children. Our family sends condolences to her family.
Dear Ken, Karyn, Kaitlyn and Family,

we shall miss her bright smile.

At two Lambeth art meetings I had the pleasure of talking with and sitting with Ruthanne. Despite her challenges her positive attitude and strong spirit shone through. My condolences to her family and all who knew her.
I was in awe of Ruthanne’s courage to continue with her many worthy contributions at Calgary after receiving her cancer diagnosis, and prognosis. Her unwavering faith was so admirable. May knowing she is now in God’s everlasting care give you comfort and strength at this time, and in the days ahead.
Ken you have been in my thoughts since I learned of Ruthanne’s diagnosis, please accept my sincere condolences as I know this has been a difficult time for you
Dear Karyn and Family,
I had the pleasure of meeting your mother twice: once a few days before your wedding and again at the wedding itself. I remember eating pizza and chatting with her around the table. I also recall working in the in-progress studio with her and Ryan, setting out some baffling on the floor. We talked about the beauty of the studio, the wood framing, and where the baffling would go. We discussed the best ways to prepare and install it, and then we set to work together.
At that time, I didn’t know she was a teacher, but when I found out at your wedding, I wasn’t surprised. During our brief encounters, it was clear what a large heart your mother had and how easily she could inspire feelings of accomplishment in others. She made people feel valued and real, both at the studio and at your wedding. This is not only the mark of a great teacher but also of a truly good person. I am grateful for even these small moments to have known her.
Please accept my deepest condolences. Know that we are thinking of you and your family during this very challenging time and remembering your mother fondly.
With sympathy,
Philip Hohol
